London's best review, food and drink news
This store dates back to around 1900 and wears it well, making Marylebone Lane's charming caff-grocer an architectural as well as a foodie curiosity. Two soups – one meat, one vegetarian – are offered daily and these are made fresh by Paul Rothe himself. Lamb broth, chicken and ham broth, tomato, stilton and celery are all hugely popular, especially in winter, and cost £1.40-£2.30. Sandwich fillings are also made on site, and include Austrian liptauer, made with cream cheese, herbs, anchovy paste, paprika and capers; and kummelkase, a blend of Stilton, caraway and cream cheese. These can be used to fill bagels, ciabattas, baps, baguettes, bloomer bread or Ukrainian rye bread. What would the Earl of Sandwich have thought?
