Satay House attracts a happy mix of expats, locals and fans of Malaysian food, who clearly make a special journey. We arrived at 7.30pm on a Thursday to find the ground floor full and just a few tables left in the cosy yet sleekly designed basement. There was a hold-up in the kitchen; we waited well over half an hour for our starters. Still, the standard of cooking rewards patience. Buttery squares of roti canai came with chunky dalca (lentil and vegetable curry). The satay were imbued with a lovely lemongrass scent, but slightly tough chicken indicated they’d been grilled too long. No complaints about the luscious begedil (spiced lamb and potato cutlets) however – or the generous, juicy pineapple curry. The nutty scent of curry leaves wafted from a plate of tender sotong berempah (stir-fried squid with peppers). Satay House’s list of soft drinks (rose syrup and lime, watermelon juice, Milo) is fun; beer lovers can choose from four eastern lagers. Banana fritters – meltingly tender fruit inside, crisp without – came with maple syrup and devilishly good chocolate ice-cream. Another bonus: the bill was under £50 for two.

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad I tried it out. The food was full of authentic Malaysian flavours, the service was friendly & prompt & the food was good value for money. I will definitely be going back!!
We just turned up and a table was found for us.
From the start our service was excellent and the efficiency with which the waitresses carried food and cleared dishes up and down the narrow staircase was admirable.
The service was also prompt. We had lamb and veggie kebabs to start. we were all blown away by the peanut sauce which was finished with a spoon.
All our mains were excellent but I will mention the pineapple curry which was divine.
It is a small, intimate dining space, not for a quiet affair but for good food and very reasonable prices, go!
Decor was very nice, had a quick and friendly service, food was amazing not one complaint.
I went to Satay House the other night and i must say, i had a completely different experience to that of other reviewers on this site. I went on a friday with a couple of friends from work and we had a fantastic time. It was pretty busy, and having not booked, we had a pint in the pub across the road before our meal. we all had satay to start with, which was delicious, and our main courses, a variety of curries and rice dishes, which we shared, were beautifully prepared and delicious.
Although the restaurant was busy, we found the service to be spot on - friendly waiting staff and we didn't wait for any of our courses to arrive.
I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you're going with friends, as it's nice and relaxed.
The food was stunning. The signature chicken satay is the best I have tasted by far and the lamb was full of flavour
Highly recommended if you are looking for authentic food a friendly service
I love this place and am shocked by comments below. Myself and my partner have had some delicious meals at Satay House...the service isn't always great when they're really busy but at least they're friendly unlike some places.
Also, The desserts are scrumptious!
It was a Saturday night and there was a really long line outside and we had to wait about 15 minutes. I was really looking forward to this night because my friend told me the roti canai and lamb satay here are really famous. As soon as we walked through the atmosphere was really loud . They took us downstairs and there people being really loud. Me and my family were sitting under the TV where they were showing some comedy. However the service was atrocious the waitress was polish and kept chatting to our neighbors and not working i ordered the lamb satay and the roti canai. the style and presentation was excellent. it tasted very good. For the main course i ordered the curry chicken which was not cooked well but the sauce was really good. this restaurant was really disappointing. The service is atrocious we had to wait for at least half an hour before anyone realized we were still waiting for the bill. So fed up i stormed up and went upstairs to the cashier and the waiter just kept smiling. i was shocked and i highly recommenced other more good malaysian restaurats like cnr or rasa sayang.
The service and food is much more up to standard. I highly recommend not to come here. I only gave it a star because it did serve something edible
My husband and I went for my birthday, because I love Malaysian flavours and this restaurant seemed to have good ratings. We left quite disappointed.
The service was abominable. The spring roll starter was generic at best; its sauce was the only redeeming factor. My Gado Gado was tasty, primarily if not wholly because of the sauce/dressing. My husband did not enjoy his curry, complaining that the chicken was of poor quality. He didn't finish it, which is unlike him and must mean it was truly poor (as a vegetarian, I didn't taste it myself).
We received our food about thirty minutes after the people next to us received theirs, and they arrived at the restaurant at least 30 minutes after we did. We sat and waited for what seemed like forever before we could catch the eye of a server to request the bill. We then waited for at least 15 minutes to receive it and another 15 minutes to pay with a credit card. Although we arrived at a generally early dining hour, we left so late that I was worried the tube might have closed.
Love love love this place! very good value and amazing food
The worst of the worst service. We were there last week and I was disgusted at the Waitress who all out ignored us. After an hour of waiting for our food in the near empty restaurant, we left.
Avoid them
