The original Lola Rojo - the second branch in Fulham closed at the end of 2011 - remains a destination for good, fun Spanish food. The stylishly modern dining room is lively, the tables close-packed and the service a bit erratic, though most regulars don't seem to mind. Possibly because interesting nueva cocina (new-wave Spanish cooking) dishes leap from the menu like caged bulls into a ring.
There's piquillo peppers, laid flat like a matador's cloak, then topped with garlicky prawns plus a few leaves of spinach for the shock of colour; or tiny clam shells in a tomato and bean broth that evokes the coast and tastes of summer. Such tapas-sized dishes are very tempting, but they are also small, so the bill adds up fast. Larger helpings include paellas, such as black rice with squid and saffron alioli.
The wine list takes almost as much pride of place as the dishes, with well-chosen wines from good emerging Spanish regions and producers, though the choice of crisp sherries by the glass is curiously limited. On warm market days, the tiny terrace becomes the place to sit on a bar stool and observe the paseo down Northcote Road.

Tables outdoors ( 16, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( booster seats ), Takeaway serviceI went back to Lola Rojo about a week ago and i was quite desapointed. The quality of the food has gone down quite a lot and the service hasn't improved. It really is a shame as this place was really lovely before their TV coverage on the Gordon Ramsay's program.
Have been there yesterday with some friends. Food was simple but good, portions a bit too small in comparison to the average 8 £ per tapas which could very well be the proce for a main meal in many other restaurants around London...
I would agree with the other's comments on here, seems that since 2010 the Lola Roja management hasn't done anything about these comments. 6 of us went for dinner on a friday, just over 1 week ago. Table too small, barely enough space to hold all the food and we were way too close to the next table. Food ridiculously priced - since when does tapas cost £15 a dish? Isn't that a main meal as opposed to tapas?! Extremeley rude staff and it seems they really don't care about you once you're through the door - we went in at 7pm, ordered enough food and drinks for it to come to £240 between the 6 of us and were still finishing off a bottle of wine when at 8:55pm the waiter announced we had 5 mins to leave because our table was booked for 9pm, otherwise we'd get charged an additional £20!!! I have never experienced this before - it's friday night and people want to relax with good food, wine and company - isn't Spain all about 'slow food'?! We were completely taken aback and didn't know how to respond - in retrospect we should have called the manager to complain but it seems from other's comments that would probably have had no impact. Will never go there again - they really are nothing special and have no idea of what good customer service is.
If you want a nice relaxed meal don't go here. The food came so quickly it might as well have been a fast food restaurant, we had barely ordered when all the tapas except one dish came. then that one dish came 5 mins after we had finished the rest. It's worrying when food comes that quickly - cant be too fresh! The food is over priced and portions are small. Felt cheated having to pay at the end. There were so many waiters hovering around too and we were out in about 25 mins. I would not recomend this place. If you want proper good spanish food and a nice relaxed dining experience then don't go here!
A simple concept that is beautiful if executed in the fashion its supposed to be Not as an overpriced, overpresented and underwhelming experience. Highly disappointed.
I couldn't believe when the potatas bravas came out as a bed of five large chips drizzled with a 2nd rate sauce. pimentos de padron was the joke of the evening...not even the proper peppers.
A two minute walk towards the quieter end of Northcote Road reveals a much more authentic experience, and they don't try to be anything other than a 'tapas bar'.
A group of seven of us found the whole experience incredibly disappointing and we all left hungary and frustrated. The space we were in was so cramped and impossible to get to the loo without removing 3 people each time. To many tables in a small space. Food presented beautifully and tasted really good but not advisable to have a hearty appetite going in. Advised to order 3 dishes each but not enough and 4 dishes didn't ever make it to our table at all. Service polite painfully slow but one waiter a bit dismissive at times. Complained to manager but very slow to acknowledge our disappointment. He was politely defensive on many points. In the end he could only bring himself to knock about 10% off our bill. In retrospect we should have refused to pay any food bill at all. Its all very well having great food but it's worthless if the rest of the experience is so poor. Needless to say we won't be returning.

Sorry, I cannot give this place a 5* rating. The Arroz Negro (black rice with squid and saffron) was salty and undercooked and not moist enough. The Pulpo a la Plancha (grilled squid) was serve with a mayonnaise sauce! Simple tapas already delicious without mayonnaise or some non-descript sauce were made greasy and the said sauce didn't add anything to them. Even the Pimientos de Padron (padron peppers with sea salt) were squirted with mayonnaise. Disappointing! And by the way Time Out, the Lola Rojo in SW11 is in Battersea and not Clapham.
