If you weren't paying attention, you could easily miss Yoshino's neon sign, tucked away on a side alley just off Piccadilly. Downstairs, there's a sushi counter and a few small tables, but for a bit more refinement, head upstairs to the minimalist dining room.
Like the decor, the menu here is also pared down. There are à la carte options (tempura, sushi, grilled dishes and more), but set meals and platters are the main attraction.
For sashimi lovers, the chirashi sushi makes a good choice; the rice is served in a lacquer box topped with fine shreds of seaweed, omelette and mangetout, but not fish, which is on the side. Sushi assortments come scattered with seaweed flakes in both traditional and more Californian flavours.
Unlike some Japanese venues, Yoshino has some interesting desserts too, including green tea tiramisu (a little dry, in our opinion) and a tasty black sesame panna cotta.
For a change from saké, try the shochu, or choose from the small selection of wines and Japanese beer. High-quality fish and efficient service make this a great destination for a quick lunch (there's an express menu) or a leisurely dinner.

Babies and children admitted, Booking advisable, Takeaway serviceyoshino used to run the basement take-out sushi counter at the old japan centre on piccadilly, where the lunchtime queue would extend up the stairs. fantastic quality and great value - which guaranteed fresh sushi due to the high turnover.
the restaurant is tucked down an alleyway which make it feel like an authentic secret spot.
whilst excellent for good-value japanese in that spot of town, the best thing about yoshino is the take-out sushi and sashimi at lunchtime. though portions (and price points - yoshino opted to cut prices and reduce the serving size) have shrunk in the past few months, the friendly, cheerful staff make the food even more enjoyable. you get the same warm welcome regardless of if you're buying a small £2 snack or the lunch order for an entire department.
I'll never trust a time out review again! 4 stars is absolutely ridiculous. The restaurant is ultra bright, with spotlights blaring down on each individual table. The food is average at best, and horrendously overpriced for what the diner receives. The only saving grace is the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, but for the money you can get a lot better in this city. 2 stars is pushing it.
