It's wise to book whatever time you visit Orange Pekoe, so popular is this charming little tearoom near the river on the Barnes/Mortlake border. The front room sets the tone: black and gold tea canisters line one wall, while the wooden counter is laden with chunky sandwiches and classy-looking cakes. Further in, flamboyant wallpaper and pretty vintage crockery provide a decorative feminine touch. On a sunny afternoon, the wobbly metal tables outside are packed, despite being close to a busy roundabout.
Affable staff explained the deal for afternoon tea: a pot of tea of your choice, finger sandwiches (including cucumber and mint, smoked salmon, and egg mayo), a fat scone with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam, and your choice of cake. The baking (orange and almond cake, lemon chiffon cake) is tip-top. Elegant white bone china or glass teapots and a three-tier cake stand add to the sense of occasion. Breakfast, light lunches (soup of the day, ploughman's and pâté platters) and a decent array of coffee drinks are also available.

Every time I visit London from the US (usually twice a year) I make a point of telling my friend to go there for scones and tea. It is the cutest tearoom one can imagine. Inside is gorgeous but can get crowded, outside is super nice and fun if it's not too cold. We sat outside and had hot chocolate on Christmas Eve. Aside from their teas, their hot chocolate is to die for. Oh and their prices are very reasonable.
I have had afternnontea just this afternoon for the very first tim and think that the Orange Pekoe is an Amazing find, I for one will be back and spreading the word!!!!
I am absolutely shocked by the above comments - Orange Pekoe is AMAZING!! And as a local Barnes resident, I visit there often and am never disappointed. I have taken friends there many times for long leisurely champagne afternoon teas and we always leave extremely happy and satisfied with the delicious food, excellent service and friendly staff. I have had many High Teas in different locations, including Michelin star restaurants and or hotels and I feel Orange Pekoe afternoon teas are just as lovely and in some cases better. Unlike many Michelin star places, Orange Pekoe is always more relaxed, has a great ambience and it is much cheaper!!
I will be going there again, this weekend no doubt and I would recommend anybody to go, who really does know great tea and how to spend an afternoon tea feeling relaxed, although in style, with good company - friends and staff!!
Out of politeness, I rang Orange Pekoe to secure a table for two at tea time a couple of months ago. It was my companion's birthday, and I wanted to arrange a nice afternoon tea, but I warned the staff member that friend may not want the whole set tea, and she might opt for just a pot of tea and a fairy cake. What a nasty shock to be told that because I pre-booked, "the afternoon tea had been prepared especially for us" (Not true, as I rang 90 minutes prior to arrival, not sufficient time to bake all that was on offer) I was obliged to pay for two FULL afternoon teas! When we asked that my friend's sandwiches and cake be boxed up to take home (as predicted, she had been treated to an office birthday cake earlier that day), the rude staff member wanted to know why! Oh, and I need not have bothered to book, as there were many empty tables. For some inexplicable reason, I did visit again several weeks later, only to be treated to offhand, downright rude service. SURLY, RUDE service + overly sweet cakes= AVOID THIS RIPOFF masquerading as a friendly tearoom at all costs!
the owner is very rude and off-hand. if you are in the service industry, try A SMILE!!!!!
The Australian manager is very rude, I would rather sip tea at my grandmas without the course rude nature that isnt very quaint
