Sadler's Wells joins forces with Theatre Royal Stratford East and mighty Cornish theatre company Kneehigh to create a Bollywood musical set in the London's East End. It's a story of love against the odds - not an entirely original premise, but the fusion of musical theatre, Mujra-inspired song and dance and contemporary British-Asian life is refreshingly new. Choose to listen to a review, good or bad, or choose to see it and make your own mind up. Don't let someone else make it up for you. I went to this as I kept seeing advertising for it - tube stations, papers etc. I didn't know what to expect but what I got was a non stop fun filled two hours and left feeling happy and a little bit educated on another culture! I didn't understand the pigeons and fox (my only real criticism) or why there was a male dancer in the Indian numbers or why so much of the stage is unlit. My kids loved the use of shopping trolleys in one song and we loved all the individual characters. The cast are a modest 13 and are therefore never off stage - I don't know how they do it in this heat! The three Wah Wah girls took the final bow but their story isn't strong enough to come after the lead lady and bindi characters. My kids and I would have liked to have seen more of them as they were funny when they were on and had the best voices. The Sita is suitably rebellious for a teen but we weren't convinced of the attraction with her geeky, awkward boyfriend! And there was a clever usage of grey hoodies for annonymous/background characters. I laughed and cried and would happily recommend you see this before it's gone. It's a great way to celebrate London in such a celebratory year.
Forgot to add.... you can see a brilliant movie for £6.50 in any cinema in the UK - what's this all about - £27 quid to be bored and insulted? WE ARE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE!!!!
Shame, so sad that we are stuck stuck stuck with a Bollywood hangover for soooooo long - bring back the days of cutting edge Brit Asian Theatre - where have we banished them all too? Nothing Wah Wah about it am afraid; bland, boring, dull. Thanfully the music helped the pulse to keep it on its feet.... but even that lacked polish!
An entertaining show with some flaws but nonetheless entertaining.
I went with a friend on Friday we had an enjoyable time. A good use of stage and props to build the scene (don't expect Broadway standards). Although, as mentioned the continual use of pigeons did not really add any real symbolic value and just seemed odd.
Some good performances especially by the short chubby woman who was brilliant from her comedy sketches to her unexpected dances sequences. However, what let it down was the singing which other than the older members of the cast was somewhat poor. From Bollywood, you expect singing and dancing and it was a shame that much of the younger cast were unable to perform to that standard.
Not a dazzling show but nonethless entertaining and worth a visit.
Loved it. My partner and I took our 4 children aged 10-14 and we all found it fabulously entertaining, energetic, funny and engaging. Recommended.
Imaginative use of props/scenery that I've never seen before. The dancing was excellent - however, I the singing could have been better or the better singers could have sung more numbers.
Overall, a very enjoyable evening.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. I would NOT recommend anyone to see this production. And the pigeons? What were they all about?
Technically there may be many things which may not be of very high standard, more dances could have been included, but as far as entertainment is concerned, it was very good indeed. my reason for seeing the show was to be entertained.
I went to see the performance on the 24th May @ Peacock theatre
PLEASE do yourself a favour, do not waste your precious time watching this pathetic/non enthusiastic performance.
Wah Wah Girls - Britain meets Bollywood - a glossy enough title to attract people to purchase tickets. Where do I start with the production - here is my list of complaints:
• The production starts without a curtain raiser
• A stereo typical image of hundu’s and muslims
• Only 10 people in the cast
• Pigeons were highly annoying – what is it meant to symbolise? I can understand using a peacock since it is India’s national bird. The character walking around being a pigeon throughout the whole production… sadly I do not understand why anyone would accept that role.
• COSTUMES
Most of the cast were rocking around on stage with grey joggers and hoddies (Do all young British Asians hang around in hoddies?)
The Indian costumes by the 2 lead artists were worn with leggings, since when do people wear kurta without its matching pyjama or chudidar? It’s a very poor portrayal of beautiful cultural dress.
• PROPS
Extremely poor, most props were probably either picked up from a dump yard or maybe from back end of an alley! There is a scene with supermarket trolleys!! Trashy!
• SET
The scenes were on a printed cloth? Such an ancient concept! Use of stage – poor
• DANCES
Non energetic performances! Only 4 Bollywood songs were performed. The Devdas song chorography was unchaged and some of the steps were same as the movies.
• STORY
There was no clear message, no beginning – middle and an end! Totally failed to execute a clear message “Britain meets Bollywood”. India and Britain share so much history, sadly nothing was bought forward!
Overall it’s a cheap- budget production, with very little actually almost NO creativity. I have seen better school plays! You are better off donating money to a good cause!
