Series one, episode one
Immediately after the return of series four of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ at 9pm comes this rather more short-lived supernatural US import (already canned by home network ABC). Realising your place of work may be governed by a demonic and malevolent force is something we can surely all relate to. This is the fate of fresh-faced couple Jane and Henry as they take up new jobs at the upscale Drake Hotel on Manhattan's Park Avenue. In a scenario reminiscent of hilariously kitschy Al Pacino vehicle ‘Devil’s Advocate’, success comes with a touch of spookiness in ‘666 Park Avenue’ – which is pitched somewhere between E4’s ‘Revenge’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’.
With a cast of journeymen and women from the backwaters of American telly, expect to find yourself saying things like: ‘Ooh, look, it’s Locke from “Lost”,’ (Terry O'Quinn) and ‘ooh, look, it’s Wilhelmina from “Ugly Betty”‘ (Vanessa Williams) tonight. What you won’t expect, however, are some truly inspired acts of devilry, including a killer elevator that manages to execute its target with the clinical ease of a Navy Seal.
