Pinacoteca Girolamini

Pinacoteca Girolamini review Rate it

From the entrance, a flight of steps leads up to the right and into a splendid cloister planted with medlar and lemon trees. This small art gallery is one of Naples' most rewarding. The last two rooms (four and five) are the best, with Battista Caracciolo's superb chiaroscuro Baptism of Christ and other works, as well as Andrea Vaccaro's Adoration of the Shepherds, Luca Giordano's stirring Mourning the Death of Christ, and five paintings bearing the typical grotesque features of Giuseppe Ribera's school. Along the side walls are works by Neapolitan stalwarts Paolo de Matteis and Francesco Solimena. The 60,000-volume library is renowned, but closed to all but the most insistent.
