Gran Caffè Gambrinus review Rate it

Gambrinus owes its fame to its central location, the impressiveness of its flouncy art nouveau interior and its distinguished history; established over a century ago, its famous former clients include Oscar Wilde. In truth, it's quite expensive and service can be far from friendly. Its rather racy past is far behind it, too: in the 1930s the government closed down certain rooms that were the haunt of left-wing intellectuals, but these days you'll find more fur coats than anti-fascists. Still, it's a very convenient meeting place for an aperitivo (especially if you're going to San Carlo, just over the road).
