Built in 1882, when the Santa Lucia seafront was created in a huge redevelopment, the Vesuvio was completely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in 1950 with the addition of two extra floors. On the top floor is the roof-garden restaurant, named after Enrico Caruso, a favoured guest. Royalty, world leaders and top Italian footballers have all stayed in its stately rooms and opulent suites over the centuries - Queen Victoria, Grace Kelly and, more recently, Bill Clinton. The spa is wonderful.
