CMA Arty Gras 2012

The Children’s Museum of the Arts, one of our very favorite museums for kids in the city, turns 25 this year, and it's celebrating the milestone in part by making its spring multicultural festival series the biggest one yet. (Another birthday special is the museum's "Face to Face" show, which opens Feb 7.) The series features five festivals, each celebrating a different region of the world; it kicks off on Saturday, February 2, with a Lunar New Year fete and promises to deliver a jam-packed, hands-on exploration of international cultures throughout the spring. “At CMA, we love to explore and celebrate the diverse, artistic, and cultural traditions that exist within New York City,” says CMA communications coordinator Jess Peterson. “It’s also a great chance for young kids to be inspired by and interact with a culture they may not know much about.”  Like February's other museum family days, this year’s multicultural festival—with more performances and creative workshops than ever before—is bound to broaden your crew's horizons.

All festivals take place at the Children's Museum of the Arts and are free with museum admission.

Lunar New Year Festival

  • Price band: 1/4

Featuring twice as many performances as last year, the Lunar New Year fest celebrates the Year of the Snake in grandiose style. Tots can try their hand at red-ribbon and handkerchief dancing, calligraphy, paper cutting and dough-figurine sculpting with help from the CMA staff and other professionals. Performances include Chinese dances by students from P.S. 124 and the Chinese Cultural Center—a copartner of the event, along with Music from China—and a concert by the Chinese Youth Orchestra.  "Many of the performers are young children,” Peterson notes. “It’s inspiring for kids to watch others their own age do these amazing things.” Kids can also help construct a giant snake costume for the Lunar New Year parade. All ages.
