Museum of Math opening day

The long anticipated Museum of Math, the only museum dedicated to mathematics in North America, opened its doors to the public on Saturday, December 15, and we couldn't resist the chance to see how kids would react to the institution. We had had a sneak peek at the museum back in October, and got the chance to visit again a few days before it opened so we could give you the scoop on what the museum has to offer NYC families. But as MoMath is, above all, meant to inspire kids, we not only snapped pics of mathematicians-in-training but also asked children what they thought of the museum on its opening day.

Daniel, 7, Battery Park City

"I think it's fun. We got to build a roller coaster. I kind of liked it because you can design your own track in any way and you can engineer it to actually move the correct way."

Chase, 8, Stuyvesant Town

"It's really fun. The bikes are my favorite part. I like that it moves with square wheels, and it works because there's indents in the middle [floor] and then the corners [of the wheels] can go in to move through. I liked the Tracks of Galileo. The part up top you have to move it so [the object on track] can get to the end. You have to make sure the track isn't too high and that way [the object] can ride through."

Georgia, 9, Brooklyn

"I think it's cool. In school, I'm like, ugh math, but now I'm here and I think math is awesome. It's all fun and awesome but you learn something."

Julianna, 7, Bronx

"I like the pattern mix. You make a pattern with one or two circles or three and you see if there's a pattern or if there's not a pattern. Math is my favorite subject. Science too. I want a science museum and a music museum. I also made shapes at the Mathenaeum. I got to make shapes with colors."

Troy, 11, Brooklyn

"It's very interactive and has some pretty cool exhibits. So far I like the square-wheel bike because I feel like it would be bumpier if it was designed differently. It would probably be more bumpy if it didn't have the grooves on the road. I also like [the Tracks of Galileo] where you change the angle of the track to make the roller coaster able to have enough velocity to go all the way through the track. My favorite subject is math. Every year [my dad and I] build a roller coaster of a different kind for my birthday. This year it's marbles. So we have to build a path for the marbles to go on."
