After 15 years as a showcase for great family fare, the New Vic is not resting on its laurels. Tweens should be charmed by the season opener, an offbeat operatic adaptation of Puss in Boots (Oct 2--10) featuring puppets and select Spanish-language performances. Next up is the circus-like ZooZoo (Oct 15--24), a visual wonder complete with acrobatic feats. The Halloween offering Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe (Oct 29--Nov 7) explores the mind of the dark poet through storytelling, song and spooky imagery. Parents of preschoolers will want to hold out for Egg and Spoon (Nov 2--21), a nature-themed experience designed to engage the youngest theatergoers. Finally, we can all find refuge in lowbrow humor with Squirm Burpee Circus: A Vaudevillian Melodrama (Nov 12--28). Now there's a title that says it all.
