Canstruction

Power outages and flooded subway tunnels caused by Hurricane Sandy may have postponed the 20th annual Canstruction, scheduled for early November 2012—but the superstorm couldn't keep the canned-food sculptures away for long. In the latest display of New Yorkers' resiliency, 25 architectural, engineering and design firms signed up for another go at the quirky competition, which will take place Friday, February 1, to Monday, February 11, at the World Financial Center. As always, each group is allotted only one night to color-coordinate and stack its cans into larger-than-life designs (Angry Birds, Lady Gaga's shoe and Mr. Potato Head have all been portrayed in previous years). After the public viewing period, the sculptures will be dismantled and the cans donated to City Harvest, which will distribute approximately 74,000 meals to hungry New Yorkers, including those still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Looking to get in on the charitable action? Bring your own canned goods to the exhibition space to donate to the City Harvest food drive.

Canstruction takes place at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, 200 Vesey St at West St (212-417-7000, worldfinancialcenter.com). Fri Feb 1–Sun Feb 10 10am–6pm; Mon Feb 11 10am–5pm. Free; suggested donation one can of food per person.
