Central Park Summer Stage Family Day

Summer definitely seems a little closer now that the City Parks Foundation has announced its annual lineup for SummerStage, the music and arts bonanza that brings top-notch artists to NYC parks for gratis performances. This year's series, "This Is ___ Hip-Hop," is a nod to the genre's 40th anniversary (DJ Kool Herc began spinning records in his South Bronx apartment's rec-room in August 1973!), while also showcasing Latin, jazz, opera and world beats. Although performances by the likes of Metropolitan Opera stars (July 16–Aug 1), the Martha Graham Dance Company (July 23–24), Balkan brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia (July 14) and DJ Kool Herc himself (July 10) welcome audiences of all ages, you and your kids won't want to miss SummerStage's family days, held in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. On tap at the Central Park mainstage's Global Family Day (July 7, 3–6pm) are acrobatic troupe the Carpetbag Brigade, folksy songstress Elizabeth Mitchell, the Caribbean-style Natural Expression Rhythm Band and African diaspora arts groups ASE Dance Theater Collective and Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy. Look out for a Michael Jackson tribute, a show by family soul band Shine & the Moonbeams and kid-friendly DJ sets at the other family days.
