The 2012 NYC Easter Bonnet Parade

If you and your kids haven't started crafting your Easter bonnet already, consider this your official reminder. This Sunday, March 31, the annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival will take over Fifth Avenue with its outlandish haberdashery: ten-foot-tall hats, costumed pets, bonnets with live birds nestled inside and more. The tradition started in the mid-1800s, when high-society ladies would promenade in their Easter finery after church. Don't expect to see any floats here; the parade is structured around individual spectacle and daring fashions, with prime bonnet viewing around St. Patrick's Cathedral. We suggest your brood get into the spirit of things and create your own out-of-this-world chapeau—check out our slideshow above from last year's Easter parade for inspiration. Plus, if one afternoon of Easter fun just isn't enough, check out our roundup of the best Easter events for kids this year. Sun Mar 31 at 10am. Fifth Ave from 49th to 57th Sts. All ages.
