Brooklyn Book Fest

The Brooklyn Book Festival, one of favorite events of the year, is right around the corner and we got a sneak peek at this year's happenings. Younger kids visiting the Target Children's Area (on the plaza) can listen to authors like Peter Brown (Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, You Will Be My Friend), Betsy Bird (the children's library specialist extraordinaire who penned our top 50 books for kids article, here debuting her book Giant Dance Party) and David Ezra Stein (Interrupting Chicken, Love Mouserella) reading their new books, or take workshops on such subjects as cooking and comic book creation with pros in the Borough Hall Conference Room.

Over at the Youth Stoop (at the plaza and in Columbus Park), somewhat older readers will get treated to laugh-inducing antics from the formidable Jeff Smith (the beloved Bone series) and Michael Buckley (The Sisters Grimm), watch cartoonists face off in the Comics Quick Draw and take in a talk about that forgotten group, the middle grade readers (ages 8 to 12), with this year's Newbery Medal winner, Katherine Applegate (The One and Only Ivan). Another not-to-miss author appearance: the iconic Lois Lowry, the recipient of this year's Brooklyn Book Festival BoBi Award and one of the most important children's and YA authors of our time, will give a talk to fans of all ages that's sure to be as enlightening as her books. Stay tuned for details, plus more info on the fest's cool bookend events on September 21, including screenings of the animated (1973) and newer (2006) film versions of Charlotte's Web, in honor of the original movie's 40th anniversary, at BAM. See you there!
