Kid-lit illustration aficionados won't want to miss this show of work by John Nickle, the talented artist behind such books as the film-spawing The Ant Bully (1998), Hans My Hedgehog (2012) and his latest, Who Pushed Humpty Dumpty (2012), among many others. Working with old-school acrylic on paper as opposed to digital software, Nickle crafts rich, mysterious illustrations—usually depicting wonderfully expressive characters—that almost tell the story all by themselves. Note that the gallery is only open on select days.

"John Nickle: Selected Illustrations, 1988–2012" is on view at the Milton J. Weill Art Gallery at the 92nd Street Y from Mon Jan 21 to Mar 4 noon–4pm on select days (Jan 21–23, Feb 1, 4, 7, 18, 19, 21, Mar 1, 4).
