New Cake Boss Café comes to Times Square
We caught up with Buddy Valastro to get the sweet deets on the new New York City outpost of his shop

No longer will city kids have to board the PATH train and wait in round-the-block lines to taste treats from Carlo’s Bakery (and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Boss himself!) The Hoboken pasty shop has extended its empire to the heart of Manhattan, where we met up with Buddy Valastro, the star of TLC’s hit reality series, Cake Boss at the new store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, May 1. Fans of the original can still expect the same delicious Italian desserts like cannoli, biscotti and tiramisu, as well as kid-friendly sweets like peanut butter cupcakes and black and white cookies. Buddy’s own four children each have their personal picks: “Buddy (Jr.) likes classics—you know, vanilla cupcakes with chocolate fudge. Carlo is the cookie monster. He’ll scarf ‘em down two at a time—and he’s only two! Marco is the more adventurous one, so he’ll eat a cannoli, and Sofia likes the lobster tails. Those are my favorites, too. They’re the flaky-crust pastries filled with a cream center. So good.” The space, a bright Old World-style bakery fits right in with what “La Famiglia” is all about: “My favorite part is the open kitchen. You can see stuff coming out of the oven; you smell it, and you get to see the artistry of baking,” Buddy says. But when it comes to sneaking a peek of the Cake Boss at work, Buddy warns that kids will have to be super sleuths: “I’m usually here about once a week, but a lot of times it’ll be more like a sneak attack!” The store plans to hold regular classes (think cannoli-making and cupcake-decorating,) and events like the grand opening celebration on Friday, May 3. Head over to the café from 7 to 11pm, where kids and families can catch live music, play trivia games, win prizes and meet the Boss.
