Although we're still in denial that 92YTribeca is closing its doors this summer, there is a silver lining: The beloved family-friendly downtown cultural hub has announced that the Okee Dokee Brothers will be playing the final concert in its Bring Your Own Kid series on Sunday, April 28. [UPDATE: We spoke to the folks at 92YTribeca and they've just announced a BYOK concert by Suzi Shelton for Sunday, May 5. We'll keep you posted as we get additional information on whether or not more concerts will be scheduled after the May date.]
Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing (they're not actually brothers!) made headlines in February after winning Best Children's Album at the Grammy Awards for Can You Canoe?, inspired by a summer paddling trip down the Mississippi River. Their BYOK finale represents a prime opportunity for NYC families to catch the musical duo in action (they're based in Minnesota) and seems a fitting swan song for a cultural space that has helped the kindie movement gain momentum, along with Symphony Space, Littlefield and the Jewish Museum. With kindie music bigger than ever (as evidenced by KindieFest's family concert, which is already sold out!), we're sure the independent strain of children's music will keep going strong.
