Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 5

The long-awaited Pier 5 at Brooklyn Bridge Park finally opened to the public last week, spanning five picturesque acres along the East River shoreline. The main attraction are three multi-purpose sports fields, two of which can be combined to serve as a regulation-sized soccer field. One field is the perfect size for youth matches—it's designed not just for soccer games but also for rounds of lacrosse, rugby, cricket, flag football and ultimate Frisbee. The super-green fields are made from synthetic turf with shock pads and temperature control, and the sides are lined with benches, bleachers, and coverings for shade. Because of the flood damage the park sustained from Hurricane Sandy, the electrical equipment that powers the pier lights has not yet been restored; once it has, the fields will be open for nighttime play. (They’re already open for public free play, and will be available for league play starting in spring 2013.) Next to the playing fields, a 620-foot-long Picnic Peninsula features picnic tables with umbrellas, barbecues, a concession stand, a tetherball court and two kiddie play areas. There’s also a fishing area with tables for bait preparation and fish cleaning.

In the next few weeks, the park will see another exciting addition to its landscape. Squibb Park Bridge, a 244-foot pedestrian bridge connecting Brooklyn Bridge Park to Squibb Park in Brooklyn Heights, is currently under construction. When it’s finished, the bridge will make BBP more accessible to the surrounding neighborhoods and to public transportation, a blessing for families from all five boroughs.
