Young historical fiction connoisseurs gather in this monthly book club to discuss the current read and learn about the historical period in which it takes place, examining museum artifacts that relate to the book’s topic. In between meetings, readers share their reactions online and even correspond with some of their favorite authors. This month, enjoy two books detailing imporant points in US history. First, The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine, a story about "the lost year" when all public high schools were closed between 1958 and 1959 in Little Rock, Arkansas to avoid integration (June 1), followed by A Diamond in the Desert by Kathryn Fitzmaurice, a fictional story exploring the life of a young Japanese boy living in an internment camp with his family during World War II (June 29). Ages 9 to 12.
