Macy's Flower Show 2013: The Painted Garden

Macy's Flower Show: The Painted Garden is here. While we’ve been freezing all month long, spring’s been hiding under the big white tent at 34th and Broadway—and who could blame it? We got a sneak peek at the 39th annual Macy’s Flower Show: The Painted Garden, opening on Sunday, March 24, where the colorful world of South Asia thrives amid the frigid temps of midtown. The theme of this year's new show, the Painted Garden, showcases species indigenous to India and South Asia, as well as aromatic spice markets and traditional architecture from those balmy regions. Upon entering, expect to see a ten-foot-tall elephant adorned with shimmering paint and thousands of live flowers in Indian ceremonial style. Follow the path (painted with magic carpets!) to a cul-de-sac with trickling fountains set before a majestic temple. Click through our slide show to catch a glimpse of the spectacular floral arrangements, and be sure to see them yourself on Family Fun Day, this Sunday, March 24. Head upstairs to the kids’ department, on the seventh floor, to catch a reading of Susan A. Shea’s “Do You Know Which One’s Will Grow?” at noon. Afterward, kids can get a balloon animal, decorate cookies and make such springtime crafts as a terrarium or their own floral picture frame to take home—the perfect way to kick off spring break. Should the day leave you wanting even more color, plan a trip to the NYBG's Orchid Show before it closes in April.

The Macy's Flower Show runs through Sunday, April 7.
