Cirque du Soleil show "Totem" at Citi Field

It's been 25 years since Cirque du Soleil first came to New York City—and on Thursday, March 14, the company's latest show Totem opens under the big top at CitiField. (The show runs through Sunday, April 21; to purchase discounted tickets through Time Out Kids Offers, click here). The production, which blends acrobatics and movement with an exploration of evolution, traces the journey of the human species, while drawing on influence from other animals and dream sequences. Our photographer Eric Harvey Brown got a sneak peek of the dreamlike, acrobatic journey during the show's dress rehearsal last night—scroll through our slide show above to check out the photos he snapped. We also chatted with Totem spokesperon Francis Jalbert to find out which parts of the show parents and kids should keep an eye out for.

Is Cirque doing anything special to commemorate the fact that it's been 25 years since the company had its first show in NYC?
We're bringing back a Cirque du Soleil big top show! New York City audiences first fell in love with the charm of the big top and we are happy to finally bring it back to town with the awe-inspiring and intimate experience that is Totem. The show has wowed more than two million people since its opening night in April 2010 and after more than a thousand performances it's absolutely ready to take the New York audiences on a journey.

Which parts of the show will kids really enjoy?
There is literally something for everybody in the show with acts like Unicycles and Bowls in which five young women ride seven-feet-tall unicycles while tossing metal bowls from their feet to their heads. Every scene and act brings its abundance of surprises; the whole family will be entertained by the antics of the not-so traditional clowns and thrilled by the death-defying acrobatics of the Russian Bars and the Roller Skates acts.

What ages is the show best for?
Although, the show was not specifically created for kids, it speaks to an audience ranging from 4 to 90-years-old. Our objective is evoke the emotions of the audience and let them have their own interpretation of the different scenes. Each audience member, in regards of his age and his individual background, will have a different experience of the show. They step in the big top, forget about their own reality, and let themselves dream with us for two and a half hours.

Get tickets from just $60 for performances through May 13
