"Tropical Paradise" at the New York Botanical Garden

Yes, it's mid-January, the time of year we all dread for its short, colorless days, chilly temperatures, restless kids and no spring in sight. Yet somehow we always seem to make the most of it, and this year we have a new trick up our sleeve: the new "Tropical Paradise" show at the New York Botanical Garden, which opens on Saturday, January 19. It's a rare New Yorker who would say no to a trip to the Caribbean these days, but this exhibit—a showcase of the garden's resident warm-weather plants and trees basking in warm humidity of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory—brings the tropics right to the cold gray city. Families can take self-guided tours through the tropical display or meet up at 12:30pm for the dally guided tour. Kids are invited to join in a scavenger hunt that starts in the Victorian-style Conservatory and continues in the Everett Children's Garden. And everybody can check out an exhibit of award-winning garden photography and, if you're there on a Sunday, get a photography lesson to boot.

The show "Tropical Paradise" is on view at the New York Botanical Garden from January 19 to February 24.
