What New York City kids love about having pets

We asked New York City kids to give us the scoop on how they spend time with and take care of their pets.

  • Shiloh, 4, Park Slope, Brooklyn, with Milo

On how he spends time with his cat: "I love making Milo catch balls. He is a good catcher! I also give him chicken when Mommy cooks, and he plays with me when I play Legos."

  • Madeleine, 10, West Village, with Boo and Mia

On playing with Boo and Mia: "My favorite thing to do with the gerbils is let them explore a bed or even the floor. They have very curious and funny reactions. Boo likes to hop around really fast on the bed like a rabbit, and Mia likes to jump off the bed and explore the floor."

  • Sadie, 6, Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, with Sheba

On what she loves about her pets: "I love to rub Sheba's tummy, and I love it when it snows and she pulls me around the park on a sled. I love it when Misty sleeps curled up with me all night. She purrs the whole time."

  • Lucas, 4, and Ella, 20 months, Park Slope, Brooklyn, with Doogie

Lucas, on how his family adopted Doogie: "We saw a truck that finds dogs, that I think live in the forest, and they bring them into the truck, and then they bring them into New York, and we found a great dog in the dog truck."

  • Brandon, 7, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with Hershey

On why he adopted his dog: "We were fostering Hershey because he was sick. And then I didn't want my mom to bring him back to a cage. I wanted to give Hershey a home because his old family didn't want him anymore and they left him alone in a place full of other animals, and Hershey was really scared."

  • Alexis, 11, West Village, with Comet

On why her family decided to get a dog: "I was begging my mom since I could talk until I got a hamster (which died), and then another (which ran away), and then a guinea pig (that we gave away recently) and then finally, a dog (which we still have). Now he is one year old, and we will keep him until the end of his days."

  • Cory, 8, Englewood, NJ, with Mr. Frizz

On how he adopted Mr. Frizz: "I just couldn't stop looking at him. I guess you can say I fell in love. I knew I had to have that cat if we were going to get a cat. One of the ASPCA volunteers told me he comes with another cat because they're inseparable. At first my mom looked at the voleeteer like she had two heads, and I begged her so much because Mr Frizz is so funny and cool. I told her I would do chorus for a year, and then she said okay. I love Chance and Mr. Frizz because they sleep in my bed and make me happy. Shhh, don't tell my mom, but they're my babies. "

Shiloh, 4, Park Slope, Brooklyn, with Milo

On how he spends time with his cat: "I love making Milo catch balls. He is a good catcher! I also give him chicken when Mommy cooks, and he plays with me when I play Legos."

In our list of the most-beloved animal-themed films for kids, we celebrated the deep bond between families and their pets—a connection that remains as strong today as it was in post–Civil War Texas or Depression-era Britain. Inspired by this childhood rite of passage, we chatted with New York–area kids about their take on growing up with a pet. Read on to see what they have to say about how they acquired their pets, how they help take care of them, and everything else they love about having a cat or a dog (or gerbils!). Plus, if your kids and pets are just as picture-perfect, be sure to enter our family pet photo contest by Sunday, April 21—your family could win tickets to Annie on Broadway and a meet-and-greet with the pup who plays Sandy!
