Jene Highstein (1942–2013) was a sculptor who figured prominently in New York's late-1960s/early-1970s downtown scene, though he's underknown today. His work is something of an oxymoron, with its organic take on minimalist forms (recalling flying saucers or sensuously rounded hillocks, for instance) and very handcrafted appearance. But his objects possess an undeniable poetry, as this pocket survey attests.
