Born in 1929, Leaf got her start in Chicago, where she assimilated a synthesis of postwar existentialism, Symbolism and Expressionism, which she brought with her to New York in 1960 —just as the nascent Pop Art scene would make her art seem retrograde. She stuck to her guns, however, focusing on themes such as love, sex, family, death and feeling, resulting in work that is both humane and humanistic.
