"Gerhard Richter: Painting 2012"

The uneasy dance between painting and photography as (supposedly) competing mediums of representation has always been an important aspect of Gerhard Richter's work, and in this exhibition, he takes the idea into the digital age. Despite the title, there are no paintings, so to speak, included here. Instead, there are digital prints that represent a computerized dissection of a 1990 Richter painting, and a large sculpture of six standing glass panes, racked in an elegant steel structure. The result is a meditative interplay between the old notion of painting as a window into an idealized world, and a real world increasingly defined by infinitely malleable forms of information.
