In 1980, with New York City still flat on its back economically, the artist collective Collaborative Projects, Inc. (a.k.a. Colab), organized a group exhibition of some 100 artists, in a building at W 41st St and Seventh Ave that used to be a massage parlor. Taking up all four floors of the building plus its basement, the "Times Square Show," as it was called, represented the opening shot for the art of the 1980s and occupied the veritable ground zero of New York's nadir. It included several names that would go on to become widely known—among them Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jenny Holzer and Kiki Smith. This exhibition takes a look back at that watershed event from the perspective of a far wealthier and more anodyne city.
