A series of string-on-board cat's-cradle collages made by Harry Smith—noted artist, filmmaker, collector and musicologist—was the immediate inspiration for this elegant summer group show, curated by painter Terry Winters. The exhibition's broader theme is the old weird America captured by Smith in his iconic music compilation, The Anthology of American Folk Music. That inspiration is translated here into visual art contributions that spin out from Smith's pieces, embracing Rosie Lee Tompkins's quiltlike hangings, John Cohen's photos of Peruvian Indians weaving, and sculptures by such name-brand artists as Donald Judd and Rachel Harrison.
