Time Out says

Opened on Amsterdam Avenue in 1942, this beloved bar became an UWS institution by never straying from its roots as a textbook dive. Pop-culture credentials—including a cameo in Seinfeld and the designation as a favorite watering hole of the Grateful Dead—helped solidify its landmark status, but rising rents caused it to shutter in January 2010. Now, fourth-generation proprietor Steve Chahalis has reopened the bar six blocks away in a subterranean space that used to house Evelyn Lounge. The new digs are significantly larger, with room for pool and darts, as well as a dining space that doubles as a dance floor on weekends. Here's to another good 68 years.
