City Council proposes letter-grading system for beauty establishments in New York

Undoubtedly, New York City has some of the best hair salons and nail artisans in the country. Nevertheless, we all have a few horror stories about a mani/pedi gone wrong.

According to a recent report, there are only 27 inspectors overseeing New York City’s beauty parlors and nail salons—and there’s over 2,000 beauty establishments in the city. Gross, right?

But don’t worry—according to an article from NY Daily News, the City Council is proposing a letter-grading system for these establishments. So soon (we hope), you can walk into a salon without the fear of contracting hepatitis or staph infections.

Currently, cosmetology businesses are regulated by the state, but this legislation would be no different than the system used for city restaurants.

Thanks to The Diaz legislation, sponsored by the chairman of the Council’s Consumer Affairs Committee, Rafael Espinal, a “customer bill of rights” covering cleanliness and ventilation at salons and spas is already underway.

At this time, there aren’t many leads on how the bill will be perceived—but we can all agree that one less mani/pedi horror story would certainly make New York a more beautiful place than it already is.
