Ever wonder what it would be like to get closer to an NYC fireman than just a hunky wall calendar? On May 2, you’ll have the chance to do just that.

To celebrate their 150th anniversary, the FDNY is throwing a citywide “Open House” where every firehouse in the city (and many EMS stations) will be open to the public during two, two-hour slots.

Those who are interested in touring a station (and finally living out those childhood Ghostbusters memories) can sign up for a slot from 11am-1pm or 1pm-3pm during the event.

“It’s a day we want everybody to see what’s behind the red door,” said Capt Robert Hauryluck of Engine 54/Ladder 4 at Eighth Avenue and 48th Street to the New York Post. “We have an open door policy as it is."

Giveaways during the event will include coloring books for kids, carbon-monoxide alarms, plastic fire helmets and commemorative programs marking the 150th anniversary.

Chances of meeting Mr. January, however, most likely remain low.

You can find our more information about the event, including how to register, closer to May 2 at nyc.gov/FDNY.
