The earliest ferry to Governors Island usually leaves at 10am with the latest return trip departing between 5:30pm and 7pm. In other words, visitors generally only get to explore the island park under a shining sun.

In celebration of the opening of The Hills, however, Governors Island is throwing a one-time-only “Sunrise to Sunset Celebration” that will let New Yorkers take in the dramatic new vistas as the sun rises or sets.

Ferries will be free all day with the first ferry leaving from the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan at 5am (the approximate time of sunrise is at 5:42am) and the last ferry departing Governors Island at 9pm (the approximate time of sunset is at 8:22pm.)
