Common Pulse
Common Pulse

“Common Pulse” launches in the LES The first theatrical percussion show inspired by global culture comes to NYC September 26th (NEW YORK, NY – August 19, 2013) Musical culture from all over the world comprised of energy and rhythm. These are the ingredients of Common Pulse, a theatrical music performance whose philosophy is to promote a communal surge of positive energy and provide a memorable moment to every single audience member, which they can cherish and live with through their journey of life, or at the very least their trip to NYC. Common Pulse’s motto is “Rhythm is everywhere.” A musical performance, which consists of five musicians from various countries - ranging from United States to Lebanon - with different backgrounds and experiences, but united by passion for percussion. Each Common Pulse drummer has traveled the globe to study percussion and enrich their knowledge of world music genres and styles like ancient and modern African rhythm, Latin music and Arabian beat. They’ve toured in various countries across the world and performed for immense crowds as large as 30,000. Common Pulse shows are a combination of diverse sounds, instruments (some of which invented) and techniques, which will merge perfectly to provide a shared unique experience – as the name Common pulse suggests – to live all together as one global community. The launch show will be held September 26th at 7:00 pm at the Rockwood Music Hall, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The percussion ensemble will offer a live orchestrated drumming experience mixed with exotic vocal performances unparalleled to any other theater or live music entertainment of its kind. Common Pulse was born from the encounter of two young men, passionate about culture and music: Matthew Guarneri, the producer - native New Yorker with multiple years of film, television, commercial and theater production experience under his belt - and Nacho Arimany, the composer, a professional Spanish percussionist whose sound draws from more than just one style: he blends flamenco with inflections of African, Afro-Cuban and Arab rhythm and his creative direction is an explosion of Latin fervor, modern jazz complexity, and various other strains of world percussion. He also innovates the ways his instruments can be played, doing things like floating drums on water to alter their sound, and developed a very powerful musical language blending ancient traditions, now ready to be shared while performing in the Common Pulse shows. For more information visit the official Common Pulse website: commonpulse.com Contact Matthew Guarneri (E) info@commonpulse.com (P) 718-772-1182 (W) commonpulse.com (T) @commonpulseny (F) facebook.com/commonpulseny

New "Flight of the Bumble Bee" App Takes Kids on a Soaring Musical Adventure Launch of Interactive Classical Music App on iTunes App Store has Children, Educators, and Parents Buzzing August 10, 2013 – New York, NY – “The Flight of the Bumble Bee,” one of the iTunes App store’s latest kid-friendly apps, allows children to experience an unforgettable piece of classical music as an exciting adventure, complete with animated story and interactive cartoon visuals. This interactive app turns Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous composition “The Flight of the Bumble Bee,” one of the world’s greatest classical scores, into pure fun! As kids follow the notes and the imaginative, narrated tale of an impatient bee, they are able to make the app’s brilliantly illustrated characters come alive by tapping or touching the screen of their iPad. With its combination of superb music—performed by some of America’s finest musicians and recorded by an 11-time Grammy winning producer—and entertaining video designed to fit perfectly with the musical twists and turns, the new app is already earning raves from children, educators, and parents alike. “This new app charmingly and enchantingly invites children into the world of classical music through story-telling, interactive animation, games and do-it-yourself art,” says Bruce Adolphe, Director of Family Concerts for The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. “A generation of children will hear their first performance of ‘The Flight of the Bumble Bee’ through this app.” ”Flight of the Bumble Bee is a brilliant creation appealing to visual and auditory learners of all ages,” agrees Pam Wolf, Founder of the New York Kids Club. “It sizzles with energy as it enriches the emotional, creative and intellectual mind.” Experts in child growth and development agree that nurturing an appreciation and understanding of the “language of music” helps children flourish, intellectually and emotionally. Children may view this app as an entertaining game—but parents and educators will know that they’re also benefiting from the brain stimulation that classical music provides to growing minds. Children will ask for the app because it’s fun and holds their attention,” says family therapist Peter Abrons, PhD, “while parents will appreciate the beneficial effects that stem from this musical exposure. It’s a win-win!” The app is currently available in the iTunes store for the iPad only and can be downloaded for $1.99. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-flight-of-the-bumble-bee/id625638853?mt=8 see website: musicbeeclub.com

Hi - Sand Dunes or Sea Gates? That is the question this summer post Sandy...and May 21st kicks off the summer 2013 inaugural Hidden Harbor Tours sailing out of South Street Seaport, where visitors and tri-state area residents alike can go behind the scenes of New York & New Jersey's bustling harbor and learn about fascinating ideas! These tours are a great insider's view of the waterfront and are presented by the Working Harbor Committee in partnership with Circle Line Downtown. The two-hour sailing departs Pier 16 on the luxury yacht, Zephyr at 6:30pm every Tuesday through September 24, 2013. One special and new theme on the tours this summer is "Beyond Sandy - Keeping the Conversation Alive" with noted scientists, private industry developers and members of the Mayor's committees to rebuild and prevent future storm damage. The first sailing will feature Jill Eisenhard, Executive Director, Red Hook Initiative as a guest speaker. In addition each sailing will encourage support by the public of the charities involved with communities post Sandy. New York Cares and many other noted charities will be featured this summer too. To note - we have just learned that Chris Ward, previously Executive Director of The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, where he was responsible for, among many other things, construction of the One World Trade Center will be a speaker this summer on the tours and hopefully join the inaugural sailing too as a guest. Plus on August 6h we will host a special Beyond Sandy Tour with noted real estate power players onboard for one special evening to provide their view on the development along the waterfront: Helena Durst – VP, Durst Organization. President, New York Water Taxi · Redevelopment of historic Front Street · NYWT homeport in Red Hook (under 6 ft. of water) · Possibly 1 WTC (though topic may be off limits) · NYWT and Hidden Harbor collaboration on Beyond Sandy Tours to educate public. Richard Marin - President of New York City Wheel Corporation · Building one of the World’s Largest Observation Wheels on the South Shore of Staten Island · Went through a huge redesign of the mechanicals to protect the project from the next storm Don Capoccia - Managing and Founder of BFC Partners All the summer tours will be an exciting and educational way to see and learn about the region's rebirth. Each sailing will have a charity featured too that was/is actively involved with Post Sandy recovery efforts. For more information - www.workingharbor.org Please be in touch to join us too for the inaugural sailing May 21 at 6pm Pier 16 South Street Seaport. Thank you! Sharon Pomerantz, Pomerantz PR

Hi, my name is John C. Kuchera and I am an American Painter and After my mom passed away in 2010 I started the "Mom Show" as a tribute to her and all Moms. It is a traveling Art show that features my Large Oil paintings done at the NAAS Harlem in the Winter of 2011. Along with my paintings I have invited my fellow artists to add to the collection. The "Mom Show" will grow as it goes from venue to venue. The ultimate goal is to have the Mom Show travel around the U.S.A. and the world concluding every year in May at the National Archives in Washington D.C. for Mothers Day.

Ability vs. Disability Gary Shulman, MS. Ed. Special Needs Consultant and Trainer April, 2013 During my more than 24 years as Program Director of Social Services and Training Coordinator for Resources for Children with Special Needs and now as a private consultant and trainer, I have had the great pleasure of asking thousands of parents of children with disabilities to tell me about their children's talents, skills, abilities and passions.  Very often that question has been met with astonishment, "Someone is actually asking me to accentuate the positive as the old song says!"  What a concept!  My heart has always been warmed and my soul and spirit uplifted by the myriad responses that gleefully utter from the lips of these proud parents: "Susan is a gifted musician-she hears a song once then sits down and figures it out on the piano", "My son swims like a fish!" "Thomas has memorized the entire subway system-he is passionate about trains.", "Hector always greets me with a hug and seems to know when I am feeling down-he brightens up my life." ………and on and on.  My response is to have everyone in the room praise and applaud these positive stories of hope, joy and delight.  We of course also move on to discussing the needs, wants, wishes and dreams.   I often tell the story of an "angel" who blessed this world by the name of Matthew.  When Matthew was born, the doctor who had obviously not been through any sensitivity training, felt compelled to tell the new parents the bad news that after conducting genetic testing, Matthew was determined to have a very rare condition called I-Cell Disease.  "So what does that mean?-when can we bring Matthew home to enjoy and love him?"  The doctor proceeded to elucidate that Matthew should not be brought home but rather institutionalized!  He then felt compelled to share that Matthew's immunological system would over the course of 5 or 6 years, destroy all organs in Matthews tiny body.  "Why put yourself through such misery-he will never grow or develop Needless to say these spiritual, caring, loving dedicated parents took Matthew home and received Medicaid under the Medicaid Waiver program to meet many of his complex medical needs. He was enrolled in Early Intervention where his miraculous and talented Occupational Therapist Ilaine, only saw the potential skills, talents and strengths.  Matthew learned to happily feed himself, walk with a walker, sing, dance and love……..oh how this child gave and received love.  He was pure love.  This beautiful child positively affected ever human being who was fortunate enough to have the joy of knowing this angel on earth.  I made him pancakes during one visit and he stopped eating for a moment, turned his steroid filled, barely moving body, to face me so he could tell me, "Hey Gary!  These are delicious!" Matthew by the way had a photographic memory and could tell you every player in the  Yankee dugout, give you directions to Grandma's house and direct you to all food items in the supermarket. There is no miraculous ending here-Matthew died after 6 glorious years on earth.  Six years of love and joy.  Six years of enhancing the lives of everyone who was fortunate enough to have known this miraculous child.  At his funeral were all the friends, neighbors, family members and admirers whose lives had been touched by this angel of humanity.  The doctor who had diagnosed Matthew of course was not present.  His memory lives on in every workshop I conduct. His parents graced me with a gift that I will always cherish.  Knowing that Matthew would soon be leaving this world, they had him record anything that he wanted to say to those people in his life whom he cared for.  Sitting on my dresser is a small photo book with Matthew's picture in it.  There is a button in that photo-book.  When you press that button, Matthew's sweet voice can be heard saying, "Hello Gary-I love you!"  His spirit helps to motivate all parents of children with disabilities who have been told by "professionals" what their children would never be able to do.  Just as the Bumblebee should not fly according to scientists, yet does (because nobody has ever told the bumblebee he can't fly) so too will all children with disabilities continue to FLY as long as we continue to recognize that behind every label of disability there is a human being with abilities, talents, skills and passions…………………..and love to give and receive.  We must never take the hope away! Behind every child with a label of disability is a child with ability to be cherished, praised and supported.

Hello, Let me introduce myself. My name is Cristina, and I am the Marketing Director at Merry+Valenzuela, a Branding & Communications company based in NYC. M+V works with the Spanish shoe brand PIKOLINOS, which recently created the Maasai Project, with Brand Ambassador Olivia Palermo. This innovative venture features a collection of sandals and handbags made by the Maasai Tribe of Kenya. The result is a sustainable and fair-trade project developed by Pikolinos in conjunction with the Maasai community, helping to ensure the sustainability of one of the world's most endangered tribes, according to the UN. For this project we are collaborating with an exceptional ambassador: model and fashion consultant Olivia Palermo, who has travelled to Kenya with Pikolinos to get acquainted with the project and to meet the women involved. The campaign's photo shoot was held there, led by the model and photographer Johannes Huelb, Olivia Palermo's partner. This April, PIKOLINOS is opening a new Pop-Up Store in New York City as a kind of interactive Maasai museum where people will be able to not only buy the sandals, but also to learn about the tribe and understand the importance of the project. The rest of the PIKOLINOS collections will be displayed surrounded by projectors in an engaging and cool atmosphere. You can find out more about the store at the recently-launched website: http://pikolinos.com/maasai/pop-up We think this would be a great news item to cover in the April issue of Time Out, as we are already placing some paid ads on the printed and digital version. I would be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need, including pictures, press releases, etc. to help you create a compelling article about this exciting project. We are already in some prestigious magazines, including Harper's BAZAAR (http://www.harpersbazaar.com/magazine/feature-articles/maasai-trend-fashion-african-savannah-121012?click=lefttop). I invite you to read more about the project at http://pikolinos.com/maasai/ and don't hesitate to contact me for more pictures, information, links, etc. Thank you very much, Cristina Address: 32 Gansevoort ST, New York, NY 10014 Dates: April 13th to July 7th
