David Weiss and Point of Departure

Trumpeter David Weiss fronts the fiery New Jazz Composers Octet as well as hardbop all-star band the Cookers, but for this gig, he’s enlisted four busy scene makers. The band’s name comes from the classic Andrew Hill album, but it’s more a metaphor for bop with an adventurous streak than a literal translation of Hill’s masterpiece. Tonight’s gig fetes Venture Inward, a strong new effort on Posi-Tone.
