Deveykus, a quintet led by trombonist Dan Blacksberg, recasts Hasidic nigunim as plodding doom metal. As heard on a new Tzadik disc, Pillar Without Mercy, the blend is perfectly natural; the band's treatments—which often nod to recent work by Earth—amplify the mournful pathos inherent in the source material. Also appearing are two other Tzadik-affiliated acts, Les Rhinocéros—an eclectic Washington, D.C., prog-punk outfit whose sophomore set, Les Rhinocéros II, came out in May—and Pitom, a quartet that combines Jewish melodies with burly psych rock, mathy prog and festive surf.
