The Cat Empire + Blackalicious

The Cat Empire ostensibly plays soul music but stretches out with wacky sounds (turntable scratching, and ska and jazz flourishes) that remind us of the band Cake. The Melbourne band has a rep for pulling off super-high-energy live shows, and tonight the crew celebrates a new album, Steal the Light. Sacramento hip-hop duo Blackalicious lays down its beautifully layered, soul-steeped rhymescapes in support.
