Brawta Caribbean Café (CLOSED)

Brawta Caribbean Café faces Atlantic Avenue instead of the Atlantic Ocean, but the lack of a waterfront view doesn’t dilute the authenticity of the tangy food. Fish—grouper, salmon, snapper, cod and shrimp—comes doused with one of many fiery sauces, yet its fierceness is tempered with ginger and onions. Chicken, goat or conch roti is a popular choice among regulars. There’s no liquor license, but a selection of sorrel, cantaloupe and pineapple punches, some sweetened with brown sugar and spiced with ginger, can cool the fire. Colorful, floral tabletops and a reggae soundtrack improve the atmosphere.
