Don’t expect to get pampered from head to toe at this minimalist salon: Rather than offer a hodgepodge of services, Rizza’s philosophy is to do one thing—in this case, hair—and do it really, really well. Owner Angelo Rizza opened his eponymous salon in Chelsea before moving it to this larger West Village spot three years later, and it’s clear that no matter where he goes, his loyal clientele (mostly young professional women with a few Broadway stars sprinkled in) will surely follow. The moment you walk into the simply decorated space, where chocolate-brown hardwood floors support dramatic mirrors that lean against bare white walls, you’ll be offered complimentary water, tea, wine or coffee. Rizza and his six stylists offer cuts for men ($52–$65) and women ($75–$95) that cater to the client’s hair texture and lifestyle, and are inspired by what he refers to as “street beats,” or real New Yorkers on the sidewalks. Though the salon offers spendy Platinum Seamless hair extensions (full head $1,600), you can just as easily transform your look on a budget with single-process color ($95), full foils ($210–$225) and partial foils ($170–$190). Color virgins can opt for noncommittal blowouts ($50) and updos ($95), while everyone can maintain their locks with the same Kevin Murphy ($22–$29) and Moroccanoil ($32–$40) products used in the salon.
