Why You Beasting?

David Don Miller’s gritty and dynamic play follows an English teacher as he tries to navigate New York City's antiquated public school system. In his first year at a Bronx high school, the ambitious Rudy Donovan encounters ill-disciplined kids and a principal whose only concern is keeping his school "below the radar" and securing federal funding. A real-life teacher himself, the playwright exposes the flaws, contradictions and hand-tying rules that educators must contend with; among the issues it tackles are state testing, the controversial "rubber room" and the problem of children being pushed through grade after grade with subpar literacy skills. Miller's drama leaves you better schooled about these underappreciated heroes.—Dennis Roberson

Well structured, engaging play with explosive moments. Shane Zeigler is captivating and he has great timing and rapport with his cast mates. The pace of this story was seamless with some super comedic moments as well as some deeply dramatic ones. I'm glad to see its run extended so I can spread the word.

A powerful script and a talented cast combine to produce a brilliant and shocking play. A story of violence, of despair, of change, of hope, and the students and teachers who struggle to make the journey. The language is necessarily rough. The characters are flawed. There is nothing held back. "Why You Beasting?" is fierce! Don't miss it!
