“Enigmas (Martin Barré, David Ostrowski, Julian Schnabel and Reena Spaulings)”

Contemporary painting is topic du jour, and this group show offers its two cents with a gathering of works by four artists who, in some cases, stretch the definition of the medium. Julian Schnabel is present with nary a broken plate in sight. Instead, he offers large, smoothly transitional abstractions that combine spraypaint with digital printing. Martin Barré and David Ostrowski take similar approaches to activate white backgrounds with barely-there linear marks. And Reena Spaulings’s “paintings” are actually soiled tablecloths from after-opening dinners mounted on wooden frames.
