    E 86th St #LP7

Three-bedroom on the Upper East Side, $3,500/month ($1,166 per person)

Attention, people with roommates: This might just be your week. We’ve found two (two!) three-bedrooms in nice neighborhoods for a little over a grand per renter, starting with this pretty spacious-looking apartment a few blocks east of the JKO Reservoir. It’s got a new kitchen, central air and an elevator in the building. Best of all, as seen in the right side of the above photo, its current residents practice symmetrical book-stacking, just like the Philadelphia mass turbulence of 1947 (that one’s for you, Ivan Reitman).

    N Henry St #3

Three-bedroom in Greenpoint, Brooklyn; $3,499/month ($1,166 per person)

Our second pad for not much over $1,000 each is in Greenpoint, about a ten-minute walk from the Nassau Ave G stop (for when it’s, y’know, actually running). As well as an updated kitchen, there’s laundry in the basement, a functional breakfast bar, lots of windows and 1.5 bathrooms. Anyone who has ever had roommates can appreciate the latter.

    W 37th St #18

    Two-bedroom in Hell’s Kitchen, $3,250/month ($1,625 per person)

The listing for this one mysteriously opens by pointing out that the apartment is “steps away from Penn Station, Port Authority and Time Square” (yes, “Time” Square), which, surely, would all be places you want to live as far away from as possible? Nevertheless, it’s a big, light, clean apartment in a building with a gym, laundry and bike storage, so that might offset the pain of being constantly surrounded by tourists. Maybe.

    Gold St

Two-bedroom in Downtown Brooklyn, $3,750/month ($1,875 per person)

This is the most expensive pad on this week’s list, but look at it. It’s the sort of place you could picture sophisticated people having lovely dinner parties while discussing theater and overseas investments, or possibly Patrick Bateman viciously disemboweling a hooker. With in-unit laundry, big rooms and a deck, you could understand why someone would shell out close to two grand a month for this place.

    E 7th St #67

Two-bedroom in the East Village, $3,400/month ($1,700 per person)

Slightly less of a bargain is this apartment in the East Village, which has very few of the previous entry’s amenities, but sits neatly on First Avenue, a stone’s throw from St. Mark’s Place and Tompkins Square Park. It also has at least 26 different shades of brown in its decor, so that’s…something?
