With its breathtakingly kitsch interior and splendid ices, Fassi is a Roman institution. Founded in 1880, its walls are adorned with Edwardian adverts and Fascist-era posters that extol the virtues of the shop's wares. Service is unfailingly irascible, and the crowds can be daunting, but the ices are never less than sublime: best of all are riso - the English translation, 'rice pudding', hardly does it justice - and the Palazzo's own invention, la caterinetta, a mysterious concoction of whipped honey and vanilla.
