Rock on with our May issue

My love affair with music began when I was still in diapers. I had a baby-sized guitar – in sunburst red! – that I’d lug around everywhere and annoy people. My dad hated it. One particularly raucous session made him so mad that he snatched the six-string from my tiny infant hands and smashed it on the ground, à la The Clash. I guess you could also say that was my first brush with rock ’n’ roll. It was only years later, after actually playing in bands, that I realised the true purpose of my father’s fury: he was trying to tell me I sucked. And I did. But at least my dabbling introduced me to the vibrant local music scene – anything from mohawked punks and shaggy indie rockers to turtlenecked sound artists and day-glo club kids…

Singapore’s music scene isn’t just for card-carrying scenesters. This month, hit up Tanjong Beach Club’s Full Steam Ahead festival for a day-to-night romp by the water.

Or wax nostalgic with tributes to the great Edith Piaf.

So for those who think 'Home' is the only song we've got, you're just not listening hard enough. It's time to tune in.
