Nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Borneo, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as Southeast Asia's highest mountain, reaching a staggering height of 4,095 metres. There’s no denying that Chiang Mai makes for a tranquil place to relax and recharge. Its iconic mountain also offers a serene escape for adventurers seeking both spiritual rejuvenation and natural splendour. Standing at 2,175 metres, it is one of the highest peaks in Thailand and home to 300 different species of flora and fauna including birds like giant nuthatches and Hume's pheasants. Follow the winding trails that lead you through lush jungle foliage and limestone ridges. As you reach the pinnacle, prepare to be greeted by the beautiful sight of mist-shrouded peaks and verdant valleys stretching as far as the eye can see.

5. Mount Rinjani, Indonesia

If a climb up Puncak Jaya sounds intimidating – it is one of the famous Seven Summits world peaks after all – settle for Indonesia's next best thing: Mount Rinjani. This active volcanic giant towers at 3,726 metres and offers thrill-seekers an exhilarating challenge. Take on the three-day trekking route to the famous crescent-shaped crater lake called Segara Anak, affectionately known to the locals as Anak Laut due to its sea-like blue waters. There are also hot springs there. Along the way, look out for the rich biodiversity of the region, from rare orchids to playful macaques. Remember to always be respectful as the lake and mountain are sacred to the Sasak people and Hindus.

For an easier climb with incredible sunrise views, look no further than Mount Batur in Bali. At over 1,700 metres high, the UNESCO-recognised volcanic wonder is the first Geopark mountain in Indonesia. The trails take you through a landscape shaped by millennia of volcanic activity and up to three hours to reach the summit. As the sun rises, feast your eyes on the breathtaking sight of the surrounding caldera and shimmering Lake Batur below. For something more challenging, lace up your boots for the neighbouring Mount Agung. Currently, the tourism policy regarding activities on Bali's mountains and volcanoes is under review, so do check with your tour operator before booking.
