Naomi Kawase's film Suzaku presents the life of a young woman whose destiny is tied to the declining rural community in which she has been raised. Kawase was the youngest director ever to win the Camera D'Or prize at Cannes for Suzaku. In this early work we see tradition and family caught up against the protagonist's desire to escape the confines of a community locked in isolation, which, without a train line is destined for entropy and excommunication.
