Film Night: Wake In Fright says
Possessed by Cinema – Film Night Halloween Program.

A program of three films on the horror of possession, the creeping terror, the final acceptance and then the letting go.

Wake in Fright (1971)

In arguably the greatest film of the Australian New Wave, a young schoolteacher stranded in a country town descends into the horror of aimless debauchery otherwise known as the Australian way of life. While the film received international acclaim when it was screened at Cannes in 1971, the film was considered lost for many years, rarely shown in Australia in part because the sordid presentation of Australian life penetrated too deeply into the national psyche. Wake in Fright presents possession of an uncannily familiar kind, the possession that takes hold of our streets every weekend, the horror of masculinity, the horror of heat and the horror of those who can’t say no to one more beer.
