You are invited to the opening of Nadine Christensen’s ‘New Works’ and Zoe Kirkwood’s ‘In the round’!

Hugo Michell Gallery is pleased to be presenting the third solo exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Nadine Christensen. Christensen’s practice encompasses painting, drawing and sculpture, investigating the nature of reality, perception, surface and representation. In this new body of work, found objects such as brooms, rocks, rubble and earth, as well as window frames and rubbings, are subjects floating unanchored across painted landscapes and fields of colour.

Christensen is known for her intelligent approach to practice, making innovative connections across painted materials and methodologies. A gradual and subtle unravelling of spatial coherence takes place through the work. As an artist, Christensen continues to surprise, delight and confound the viewer through her rigorous engagement and questioning. In this way, she opens new paths forward in the malaise of contemporary painting.

In Zoe Kirkwood’s new series ‘In the round’, the artist furthers her research into painting in the expanded field. Integrating painting and sculptural elements, the artist creates an immersive spatial installation that plays with the viewer's perceived sense of dimensions. Drawing inspiration from the Baroque, Kirkwood’s installations often present a form of stage set, with careful consideration paid to lighting and viewpoint. Kirkwood is a master manipulator of surface and colour, and with a combination of modern materials this new body of work will be sure to create an absorbing experience.

We’d love you to join us in celebrating the work of these two fantastic artists. We’ll see you there!
